Secession? Are you kidding? When the Southern states seceded from the U.S. in the 1860s era, the whole U.S. Army was still using horses to haul wagons to the battlefront! There were no aircraft, no bombers or fighters, no missiles, nothing! Most of the battles were waged with ordinary old-fashioned cannons and muskets! One of the biggest battles, at Gettysburg, was strictly on that basis, mostly soldier against soldier.
Do you have any idea what a modern group of states trying to secede would be up against? The entire 21st-century military might of the world's superpower! The federal forces wouldn't even bother to send any troops to conquer the rebel states; they would just launch fleets of predator unmanned robot planes and attack their targets at will with hellfire missiles. Why waste any manpower? Factories would turn out predator drones by the tens of thousands! The rebel states wouldn't have a chance. And, just what could all those state troops muster for advanced weapons in return?
