game. If I buy an oil futures contract that you sell, if oil goes up, I win and you lose. My win plus your loss equals zero.
When God was kicked out of the public schools, that was a zero sum game.
Public schools in the U.S. were first begun to teach students to read the Bible. The Bible was commonly read in common schools, as they were called. A government education monopoly eventually developed, supported by taxes and enforced by law, that almost totally eliminated private education, even though private education consistently produces a more learned student.
This centralized government school system was led by the educational elite, who were too smart to believe in God. In direct opposition to the beliefs of the people of America, they pushed evolution. In reaction to that, in the 1920s, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi passed laws against teaching evolution in their public schools. Other states were considering such a move.
The ACLU found a part-time biology teacher in Tennessee who was willing to be prosecuted for teaching evolution, and that led to the Scopes Trial. He was found guilty, but God and the Bible were so mocked in the trial and the media that anti-evolution laws lost their support. Evolution was then taught in America's schools because no one objected strongly enough against it.
About a generation later, in 1963, judges ruled that God could not be prayed to and His Bible could not be read in government schools. Then, again, almost a generation later, in 1987, the courts decreed that evolution had to be taught in the government schools.

Notice the progression here. Schools were begun to teach God and the Bible. Evolution was outlawed in the schools. Ultimately God and the Bible were outlawed in the schools and evolution was commanded in the schools.
The reasoning behind this change was that students who don't believe in God should not be forced to be taught about Him. The result is that students who do believe in God are now forced to be taught that He doesn't exist.
This was a zero sum game. Those who don't believe in God won. Those who do believe in God lost. One side went up. The other went down.
Now notice this.
The liberals have introduced legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. Thirty states have passed measures to limit marriage to a man and a woman, and 15 other states have such laws in place. Repeal of the DOMA will allow the federal government to force homosexual marriage on all states, regardless of what their people want.
