The high cost of 'green jobs'

Spain learns the hard way – more employment lost than gained

WASHINGTON – Next week, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will visit Ringgold, Va., on a mission to develop so-called "green jobs" based on renewable energy sources.

President Obama's administration is spending massive amounts of taxpayer money on subsidizing the new jobs with the assumption they will more than replace employment sure to be eliminated by carbon taxes, cap-and-trade legislation and other limits on traditional industry.

But Washington might want to examine an ominous warning from Spain, an early pioneer in pursuing the theory of "green jobs."

According to economics professor Gabriel Calzada of King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, the Spanish government's renewable energy initiatives have destroyed 2.2 jobs for every new "green" job created.

Calzada even projects, for the benefit of Americans, that the same formula will apply in the United States if it pursues renewable energy at the expense of conventional energy sources.

"As President Obama correctly remarked, Spain provides a reference for the establishment of government aid to renewable energy," Calzaza wrote in "Study of the Effects on Employment of Public Aid to Renewable Energy Sources." "No other country has given such broad support to the construction and production of electricity through renewable sources. The arguments for Spain's and Europe's 'green jobs' schemes are the same arguments now made in the U.S., principally that massive public support would produce large numbers of green jobs. The question that this paper answers is 'at what price?'"

That turned out to be a faulty premise, continues Calzada. In fact, he writes nine jobs have been lost for every four created under such initiatives.

Neo-prophets of the Obamanoid era

Obama's Soothsaying Climate Astrologer

President Obama's Energy Secretary Steven Chu is at it again. Fresh off his declarations in May claiming computer model predictions as evidence of a certain climate catastrophe, (see: Climate Depot Exclusive: Sec. Chu's assertions 'quite simply being proven wrong by the latest climate data' - April 19, 2009), he has now gotten more bold, confidently predicting a certain climate catastrophe by the year 2109. (When he and everyone who hears his warning today will be unable to verify his predictions because they will be conveniently DEAD!)
Chu told a conference in California his latest prognostication. “At no other time in the history of science have we been able to say what the future will be 100 years from now,” Chu, the soothsayer, declared according to a June 28, 2009 article in Palo Alto Online News.
The question looms: Shouldn't Energy Sec. Chu be touting these scary predictions of the year 2100 on a boardwalk somewhere with a full deck of Tarot Cards?
Chu continued: "For the first time in human history, science has shown that we are altering the destiny of our planet...It's quite alarming. Every year looks more alarming. ... An irony of climate change is that the ones who will be hurt the most are the innocent -- those yet to be born." (Editor's Note: Climate computer model predictions are being rebuked scientifically. Even the UN admits the models are flawed and do not account for “
half the variability in the climate” and they are instead referred to as “story lines” not even “predictions.” See: IPCC lead author Trenberth, refers climate models as “story lines.” In addition, top forecasting experts say the models violate the basic principles of forecasting. See: Ivy League forecasting pioneer Dr. Scott Armstrong “Of 89 principles [of forecasting], the UN IPCC violated 72.” Also See: Forecast Pioneers: Climate modelers violated 49 principles of forecasting - June 16, 2009)
Sec. Chu is exactly the reason many scientists are now reporting that man-made global warming fear promotion has degenerated to the level of astrology.
Japanese scientist Kanya Kusano, a Program Director and Group Leader for the Earth Simulator at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science & Technology, has publicly declared that man-made climate fear promotion is now akin to “
ancient astrology.”
Mathematical physicist Dr. Frank J. Tipler, Professor of Mathematical Physics, astrophysics, at Tulane University, agrees with Kusano. “Whether the ice caps melt, or expand --- whatever happens --- the AGW theorists claim it confirms their theory. A perfect example of a pseudo-science like astrology,”
Tipler wrote on May 15, 2009. “It is obvious that anthropogenic global warming is not science at all, because a scientific theory makes non-obvious predictions which are then compared with observations that the average person can check for himself,” Tipler explained.

It's snot easy bein' green

WHEN it is dripping from your nose, says Martin Rees, a Sydney medical researcher, "green snot is good for you".

However, the enzyme responsible for giving nasal mucous its colourful shade has also been implicated in damaging arteries and contributing to heart disease.

Now Australian scientists say they have found a class of synthetic compounds that stop the damage, giving doctors a possible weapon to fight not only heart disease, but asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and even some cancers.

Going with God: Planet Earth: Too big to fail

The Obama administration has given itself an extraordinarily powerful tool that could help the president achieve all three of his top domestic goals at once--but only if he has the political moxie to deploy it to its full extent.

That tool is the proposed Endangerment Finding--a formal declaration by the Environmental Protection Agency that global warming indeed threatens human health and welfare. Once the administration issues the final declaration, the Clean Air Act is triggered, giving the administration sweeping authority to decide how to reduce global warming pollution from power plants, vehicles, and other sources, how much, and how fast. According to a groundbreaking new analysis from New York University, the administration could even unilaterally establish a cap-and-trade system very similar to what Congress is considering.

Obama's landmark proposal means that the administration no longer has to go through Congress to make the green economy a reality. No horse-trading with hostile Republicans. No need to throw tens of billions of dollars at the oil and coal industries to win the votes of polluter-friendly members of Congress. No need for sixty votes in the Senate (or even, for that matter, fifty). It will be the EPA looking at the science, listening to public comment and deciding how best to protect the planet, public health and the economy.

Go green or go to hell

or go to hell
High Gas Prices? Blame the Green Agenda Congress should be nervous, because no other issue touches so many pocketbooks as directly as gasoline prices do. Notsubprime mortgages. Not college loans. Not even jobs and not even income taxes (since 41 million working Americans have already been exempted from federal income taxes). Nine of 10 Americans still drive to work, the Census Bureau reported last year even after a gallon of gasoline climbed to over $3. That means 90 percent of working Americans see reminders along every street every day as they drive, as prices are prominently displayed at over 100,000 gas stations.
