On June 17, the Obama administration proclaimed "Recovery Summer." This was done with considerable fanfare, including the announcement that President Obama and Vice President Biden would tour Recovery Act sites—ones funded by the $814 billion "stimulus"—in full expectation the projects would contribute mightily to accelerated economic growth and job creation.
At the time, I was in Missouri, reporting on the campaign for the state's open Senate seat. As luck would have it, the candidate I was traveling with, Republican Roy Blunt, met at various stops with corporate executives, small businessmen, bankers and entrepreneurs. They were talkative.
Some were Republicans, some weren't, but they said roughly the same thing. We're not expanding our companies. We're not hiring. Bankers said they weren't doing much lending, but there weren't many borrowers either. One pessimistic businessman said he'd like to move his company offshore. Another said he wanted to hire but had backed off because his firm would exceed 50 employees and then be subject to the mandates and requirements of the new health-care law.


Now that Recovery Summer has brought slower growth and meager hiring, it's clear who had a better sense of the country's economic condition. It wasn't cheery officials in Washington whose prediction of a summertime boom was based on economic numbers from the spring. It was folks far from Washington and immersed in the real economy who saw economic stagnation ahead and were adjusting their business decisions accordingly.

Shortly before returning to the U.S. after his State Department Mideast tour, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said in Abu Dhabi that the viral furor over his insistence on building a mosque just blocks from Ground Zero was due in large part to the coming midterm elections.
Further minimizing his role, he blamed "radicals in the Muslim World ... and other faith traditions," and then almost blithely noted that "the story has expanded far beyond a piece of real estate; it has expanded to the issues of Islam in America and what it means for us."
As I have reported, Islam in many parts of the world beyond America has been affected. Al-Qaida websites cheer the rise of anti-Muslim stereotyping in the United States as a boon to recruiting violent jihadists.
Also, in this and other countries, Muslims who oppose violent jihadism cannot understand why Rauf created this conflagration when mosques have existed without controversy in New York and elsewhere in America before Rauf emerged.
In a Sept. 1 New York Daily News lead editorial, "The Imam Must Speak," Rauf is reminded of a recent Quinnipiac poll showing that 54 percent of New Yorkers do believe he has a constitutional free-exercise-of-religion right to build the mosque at that site near Ground Zero. http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=200581

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., has stated his intention to burn a Qur'an as an act of protest to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001, a date in which 19 fundamentalist Islamic hijackers turned passenger planes into missiles, exploding them into the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
General David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has responded to the scheduled protest by stating that the burning of a Qu'ran would incite violence that would endanger the lives of American men and women in uniform in Afghanistan. For this reason, I call upon Pastor Jones to not burn the Qu'ran at this time.
And yet, this episode offers a unique learning moment for Western democracies.
In explaining his impending action, Pastor Jones stated, "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats."
The burning of an American flag or the burning or the desecration of a Christian cross is a despicable act, and the protesters should be condemned. Yet unlike those who would burn a Qur'an, those protesters need not worry that they will be beheaded. They know that American or Christian leaders would not sentence them to death, nor would Western leaders use the protest action to incite violence in the populace at large. And this is the basic point of Pastor Jones' protest.

Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper chain reported in its Sept. 3-6 weekend edition of USA Today that the Democrats could be in peril this November. "Democratic congressional candidates face a political landscape even rockier than those in 1994 and 2006 that ended with election upheavals that changed control of Congress, a USA Today/Gallup Poll finds." True, but misleading.
In 1994, the Democrats lost control of the House and Senate because the Democratic majority enacted what has proven to be the biggest "jobs export bill" in the history of the world—a treaty that the US Senate was afraid to ratify. So, the Senate disguised the treaty as a jobs incentive bill called the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA] and enacted it. As he signed the legislation into law, President Bill Clinton. Clinton assured the American people that NAFTA was a piece of legislation that would increase jobs in the United States. Of course, we now know that Clinton lied. It was never designed to be a jobs bill—except in the third world where our jobs were going to be sent. And, course, what the legislation provided was a swinging door that swung both ways. Jobs out. Foreign-made, American-branded goods back in. Add to that Bill Clinton's regressive tax hike that went back a year and taxed the American people for George H.W. Bush's last year in office. The media noted it was the largest tax increase in the history of the world—until Barack Hussein Obama arrived in Washington.

It seems only prudent that Americans should join together in a class action lawsuit that calls back all living elected officials and decision making bureaucrats to explain the condition of America, and make them cough up their retirements and personal wealth to help pay back the people for the horrible and destructive decisions they have made and passed into law.

President Obama certainly has it ruff these days. With his approval ratings plummeting and both the House and the Senate trending Republican, he must feel like he's been put in the doghouse. Even members of his own party are attacking him; Chris Matthews, his designated chew toy, has even come out against the beloved teleprompter.
